What is so special about Diabetic Socks?

Diabetes has a range of complications as a result of the higher blood sugar levels damaging a range of tissues in the body. Some of those complications affect the foot. This ranges from minor infections to complications serious enough that an amputation may be needed. The nerves may be affected which means that when there is damage to the foot, it may not be felt by the person and this is going to result in even more damage happening. The circulation can be affected which means that when damage does happen, the circulation issues mean that healing is impaired. The affects of diabetes on the joints means that there will be areas of higher pressure which also can lead to an increased risk for tissue damage. It is for all these reasons that those with diabetes are encouraged to take care of their feet and consult a podiatrist on a regular basis.

They are encouraged to use different strategies to prevent problems from developing. An example of one way is to use something like the specially made diabetic socks which have a number of design features to help reduce the risk for the damage happening. The diabetic socks should be loose fitting so as not to restrict the circulation. They preferably are thicker on the bottom so that shock absorption can be increased to help protect the bottom of the foot from damage. They should either have no seams or preferably minimal seams. Seams can become the source of pressure points on the toes and this can lead to problems. The material that the socks are made out of should be of a moisture absorbing type, so that any sweat is absorbed and not allowed to stay on the foot to create an unhealthy environment. Also, it could be helpful if the diabetic socks also contain some anti-bacterial properties to help reduce the risk of an infection.
