Seventh and eighth graders using four unexcused absences or more inside the college year are delegated to take a handheld GPS device, about the size of a cell phone.

Every morning on school days, the pupils got an automated phone call reminding them that they had to get to school in time. Afterward, five times daily, they had been needed to input a code that monitors their place; since they leave for college, when they arrive in college, at lunchtime, once they leave college, and at 8 pm.

The pupils were assigned to an adult mentor who called them three times every week to understand how they were performing and also to help them find effective strategies to be certain that the students got to class on time.

Pupils and their parents chose to volunteer for the observation as a means to prevent prosecution or school with a possible remain in juvenile hall.

"The idea is for this to not feel like a punishment, but an intervention to assist them to develop better customs and get to college," explained Miller Sylvan, regional manager for AIM Truancy Solutions.

The program was compensated for with a state grant. Pupils who always skip college are prime candidates to join gangs and lead to trouble, authorities have said. San Antonio and Baltimore have especially welcomed the program.
